The Tangail Saree has received geographical indication (GI) status as a product from the Department of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries. This approval was granted on Wednesday, as reported by official sources from the Ministry of Industries. The Gazette notification regarding this matter will be published today to confirm the authenticity of the approval.
Previously, Tangail’s district administrator, Md. Kaysharul Islam emailed the Ministry to obtain the GI status for the product. Recently, India also recognized Tangail Saree as its GI product, which prompted discussions and actions in Bangladesh through various social media platforms. In response, the Ministry of Industries took the initiative to expedite the process of approving Tangail Saree as a GI product.
A meeting was convened on Monday at the Ministry of Industries regarding this issue, with the participation of Tangail’s district administrator and additional district magistrate (overall) joining online. During the meeting, it was decided that Bangladesh would take legal steps to declare Tangail Saree as its GI (geographical indication) product in response to India’s declaration. If necessary, efforts will also be made by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to resolve this.
At the same time, relevant stakeholders have been directed to facilitate the quick approval and registration of Tangail Saree for GI status. Additionally, it has been emphasized that applications for GI approval for products such as Anaarash from Madhupur, Lotkon and Sagar Kola from Narshingdi, and raw milk yogurt from Mahisher Kacha Dahi in Bhola need to be expedited as well.
To expedite the process, district administrators from all 64 country districts have been requested to identify and submit applications for one or more products or items for GI approval.
